TRAIN passengers in West Yorkshire have been given a boost after Northern slashed the price of tickets to tourism hotspots in Cumbria and Lancashire for winter.

The company has announced a 50 per cent cut in the cost of off-peak tickets from Leeds to Carlisle, Lancaster and Morecambe until the end of March 2024.

Available to customers with a Dales Railcard on services using the Settle-Carlisle and Bentham lines, the offer is designed to give the tourism industry in those locations a boost during the quieter winter months.

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: "For anyone in West Yorkshire planning a day out or 'staycation', a Dales Railcard is a must have.

"With a 50 per cent discount for adults and 81 per cent for children, your money goes a lot further when you travel by rail."

He added: "During the winter months, when the number of tourists exploring the region is lower, we have extra capacity on our services – and it makes sense to offer a discount to stimulate demand."

The offer, which is available online, via ticket vending machines and from ticket offices, follows a successful trial in 2022.
