There was disruption across Bradford city centre this evening following a report of a police incident near a major road.

Croft Street - near New College Bradford, Broomfields - was closed both ways for around an hour.

The busy route has now reopened and services have resumed their normal route.

First said bus services are still experiencing severe delays due to congestion throughout the area.

Cancellations are still likely at short notice throughout peak time, First said.

The T&A's traffic partner INRIX said police were called to the area from the A650 Shipley Airedale Road to Bridge Street.

The incident took place at around 4.50pm on Thursday (May 9).

Croft Street is one of several roads where traffic regularly builds as a knock-on effect from the city centre regeneration scheme.

The area near the New College is Croft Street's junction with Nelson Street, where the temporary bus layover point is located.

Diversions were put in place for multiple bus services.

One commuter was left waiting 45 mins for the 645 bus to Buttershaw. In the end, he decided to walk and get a taxi home.

Traffic in the direction of Wakefield Road and the routes off it are gridlocked, another driver told the T&A.

Another man, who works on Canal Road but lives in Wibsey, said it took him 50 minutes to commute home.

First bus updates

First bus said a "police incident" had led to the "subsequent closure" of Croft Street.

The following First bus services were affected 633, 617, 618, 620, 612/613/614/640/641/645/671/686.

Arriva services affected

Earlier in the evening, Arriva said: "Due to a major incident in Bradford City Centre which is causing traffic delays, the 283/283A services will be terminating in East Bierley. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

"We will try get back on normal route ASAP."

INRIX also reported: "Road closed and heavy traffic due to police incident."

The T&A has contacted West Yorkshire Police for information.
